The Bedroom is our ultimate oasis...

Now more than ever we are realizing the importance of our homes and certainly our bedrooms.
The bedroom is one of the most personal spaces we inhabit and our ultimate sanctuary.
It should not only be beautiful, but also evoke everything that represents comfort and calm to each of us individually.
There are a variety of ways these spaces can be tailored to our personal taste and needs...

The interior design styles that we choose;
Is our taste more modern or are we traditionalist?
Do we prefer pattern or are we more comfortable in a more monochromatic scheme?
Is pattern inspiring to us or do we prefer simplicity?
Do we prefer color or a muted background?

Once we have determined our design parameters, we then need to execute the design with the ultimate comfort and functionality in mind. From the selection of our mattress supplier to the source for our bed linens - our personal comfort should be paramount. Personally, I am partial to Charles Beckley Bedding and Italian made Egyptian Cotton Linens embroidered with simple details. I also have a preference for wall to wall or "Fitted" carpet in bedrooms as it provides an additional level of sound absorption and feels particularly good to bare feet in the morning - or late at night! Carpeting always feels luxurious and special in the bedroom. We must also consider light - do we require blacking out the space for sleeping or do we prefer to wake up in the morning light?

In this Bedroom, we created a classically inspired architectural background with Art Deco detailing. The King Size Upholstered Sleigh Bed is set into a recessed mirrored niche that reflects the large window and light as well as the panoramic view of the city sparkling in the evening. We also included recessed continuous lighting in the newly created ceiling cove, which is dimmable for the perfect amount of ambient light day or night. The window treatments include side panels hung from a lacquered wood Curtain Pole and a Roman Shade hung behind the Curtain Panels which can be lowered at night to completely black out the room for sleeping.

I love how this bedroom sparkles in the evening light...

Above is a Bedroom featuring a custom designed bed fabricated by furniture maker Dakota Jackson in a combination of natural sapele wood and fabric upholstery in a modernist design. This room also features a luxurious wool and silk cut pile and loop combination custom fitted carpet and Roman Shades mounted from a recessed ceiling pocket that may be lowered to darken the room.

In the country house above, we designed a custom king sized bed with a polished walnut frame and leather upholstery. At the foot of the bed are a pair of modernist benches. Flanking the bed are vintage Karl Springer Bedside Tables and modernist Murano Glass Table Lamps.

Beds often begin with a design drawing and are fabricated by workrooms to our specifications. Here you see a bed during the fabrication process and below you see the finished product installed at the residence.

Above is another detail image of a custom designed bed with a high polished lacquered walnut frame that continues around the bed base. The upholstery is designed as a series of horizontal half-round tiers set into the frame.

In the above bedroom, built in side tables with bookshelves above were important to the client for ample storage surrounding the bed. In the created niche we installed modern pencil thin swing arm bedside lights for night time reading.

Above is a fully upholstered bed that includes the custom upholstered boxsprings on a recessed base.

Above is a detail of a custom designed bed with a polished walnut frame and modernist geometric horizontal grid upholstery using a raw silk woven fabric. The oval lacquered linen night tables featuring a drawer, pull out tray and lower crystal glass shelf compliment the contemporary design of the room. Recessed Ceiling lighting is augmented by a pair of mid-century Murano glass table lamps completed with custom made string lamp shades.

An effective solution for guest can be the classic Day Bed, in the above case, two beds upholstered in a textured fabric and complimented with printed linen European Square pillows - perfect for propping up to watch TV.

For those with a more traditional sensibility, here is a custom shaped show wood framed headboard, painted with a striped and glazed finish and upholstered in a classic linen printed fabric. This bed has an attached boxspring covered with a traditional box pleated dust skirt. The bed is placed against a traditional stripped and gold ornamented wall covering and further complimented by a matched set of antique painted tables. This room has all of the luxury, charm and atmosphere of a European country house.

Here is another image of a glamorous contemporary Bedroom where the bed and Night Tables are all set into a shallow mirrored niche which reflects the windows and light from across the room.

In this bedroom pictured above, we are showcasing a modern interpretation of the upholstered bed with an exaggerated headboard height all detailed with an ivory lacquered hardwood frame. The upholstered body of the headboard and boxspring also has an unusually large scale biscuit tufted pattern.

The above bed is anchored by a custom designed polished mahogany bookcase surround.

The upper floor Guest Bedroom above features a custom geometric upholstered sleigh bed of particularly geometric design and is complimented by a pair of geometric lacquered lined bedside tables and wall mounted swing-arm lamps that have special hand woven paper lampshades.

Here we have a classic Syrie Maugham design Upholstered Sleigh Bed in a textured chenille fabric. This Hamptons bedroom features stylized printed silk curtains that are particularly complimentary to the artwork above the bed.

Here we have a light filled bedroom in shades of beige and ivory that includes a king size bed upholstered in supple leather with hardwood details. The design is made complete with the Ivory Lacquer and Polished Stainless Steel Chest of Drawers and the Parchment Karl Springer Bedside tables.
